ALOX BOPP

One gauge, 18 µm, in two grades. A is the printing grade: a protective coat over the oxide, printable and laminatable. B is the lamination grade: the same barrier, no protective coat, laminate only. Both keep the pack clear and the structure in the PP stream.

Specification

Two grades, one construction. Base film, AlOx layer and test methods are the same; the protective coating is the only difference. A carries it, so A is specified for printing and lamination. B carries none, so B is specified for lamination only.

Standard values are the limit the grade is specified to; typical values are what the grade sheet shows. OTR at 23 °C / 0 % RH to GB/T 19789 / ASTM D3985, cm³/(m²·24h); WVTR at 38 °C / 90 % RH to GB/T 26253 / ASTM E398, g/(m²·24h). Both grades are FDA-compliant. The lot certificate carries what was measured on the roll that ships.

How it runs

The coating sets the process, not just the barrier. A prints; B laminates. The notes below are the points converters ask about first, and the qualification trial is where they get confirmed on your line.

Grade A only reverse print, CI or stack
Lamination
Both grades solvent, solventless, water-based

Printing grade or lamination grade?

A carries a protective coating over the AlOx layer and is the grade the TDS lists for printing as well as lamination. Its AlOx face is specified at ≥ 38 mN/m wetting tension and runs at 48 typical — the surface a press needs. Print it and laminate, or laminate straight away.

B has no protective coat and is listed for lamination only. It goes into the structure as the barrier layer and stays there: no ink on this web. If the job prints on the barrier film, start with A.

Which face goes where

The coated face and the sealable face are marked on the roll label and on the grade sheet. Keep the coating out of the adhesive interface unless the trial has shown otherwise: place it on the product side of the outer web, which is where it protects the barrier. On B the oxide is bare, so keep it clear of grooved or scratched rollers.

What the trial has to prove

Adhesion after lamination, the seal window on your machine, print registration on a clear web, and the OTR of the finished structure rather than of the film alone. Send us the finished-structure result and it goes on the grade record.

Where ALOX BOPP is the right call

Transparent products that need oxygen and aroma barrier, and where a metallized look would be wrong.

Market Typical structure What the film buys
Chocolate & confectionery PP / AlOx-BOPP / PP Barrier without hiding the product; aroma retention
Biscuits, crackers, bakery PP / AlOx-BOPP / PP Moisture and oxygen barrier, print on the outer web
Personal care, wipes PP / AlOx-BOPP / PP Clear film with fragrance and moisture barrier
Confectionery flow-wrap AlOx-BOPP / PP sealant High-speed flow wrap with a clear barrier web
A different polymer stream is a different structure. If the pack has to be PE, use Metallized PE as the barrier layer instead.

Documentation

Issued per grade and per lot. Ask for the full pack with the sample roll rather than later, once the claim is already in a customer's hands.

Technical data sheet

Every value on this page with its method and condition, grade A and grade B.

Lot certificate

Measured thickness, width, length and barrier for the delivered roll.

Food-contact documentation

FDA compliance; EU 10/2011 migration test report supplied with the sample.

Recyclability statement

PP stream, density and label conditions for a converter's own claim.

Questions we get before the trial

If the answer you need is not here, ask it directly — technical questions get an engineer's reply, not a brochure.

What is the difference between grade A and grade B?

The protective coating. A has one, and is specified for printing and lamination; B has none, and is specified for lamination only. Thickness (18 µm), density and the haze limit are the same on both. A is specified tighter on barrier: OTR ≤ 1 and WVTR ≤ 1, against ≤ 2 for B.

Which grade can be printed?

A. It is the grade the TDS lists for printing, and its AlOx face carries the higher wetting tension — 48 mN/m typical, ≥ 38 mN/m specified — which is the surface property a press needs. B is not a print grade: if the job puts ink on this film, start with A.

Does the coating survive lamination?

It survives when it is placed on the product side of the outer web and the adhesive is applied to the untreated face. The trial is what confirms it for a specific adhesive and line speed.

Does the pack stay transparent?

Yes. AlOx is a clear oxide layer, not a metal layer, so the pack does not turn into a mirror and the product stays visible. Haze target is 2 % or below on both grades.

Which face is sealable?

One face carries the heat-seal layer. Both faces are marked on the roll label: the coated face, and the seal face. The grade sheet repeats it.

Can it replace a metallized film?

Only where you wanted transparency or a PP structure. If the requirement is maximum light and moisture barrier in a PE structure, Metallized PE is the grade to trial.
