ALOX PET

Aluminium-oxide barrier on a stiff, heat-resistant PET base. Ten grades in two families: six lamination grades with the bare AlOx face, four print grades with a protective coating over it. 12.0–12.5 µm, OTR typ. 0.11–1.55 cm³/(m²·24h). Chosen where the pack has to survive boil or 121 °C retort, or a lid has to stay flat. PET stream, not a mono-material structure.

Specification

Two families, ten grades. Every figure below is read off the current TDS; the lot certificate is what binds the roll that ships.

Two families, ten grades

Six are lamination grades: the AlOx face stays bare, so the roll is built into a structure and the printing happens elsewhere in the web. Four are print grades: a protective coating goes over the oxide, which lets the roll run through a press, a boil or a 121 °C retort without the AlOx face being handled bare. The TDS marks 103 GTH, 104 GTH and 105 GTH as print-suitable even though they carry no protective coating — treat that as an ink-adhesion statement, not as protection for the oxide.

Retort at 121 °C is available on seven of the ten grades: 102 GTN, 108 GTN and 113 GTR from the lamination side, and all four print grades. 105 GTH takes boil but not retort. 103 GTH and 104 GTH take neither; they are the print-suitable, non-retort pair.

Thickness is fixed per grade, not a ladder. 102 GTN is 12.0 µm; the other nine run 12.2–12.5 µm. Barrier is where the grades actually differ: OTR typical from 0.11 on 113 GTR to 1.55 on 104 GTH, WVTR typical from 0.18 to 1.25.

OTR is measured at 23 °C / 0 % RH to GB/T 19789 / ASTM D3985 and reported in cm³/(m²·24h); WVTR at 38 °C / 90 % RH to GB/T 26253 / ASTM E398 in g/(m²·24h). A number measured at 23 °C / 50 % RH is not comparable with these — check the humidity before you compare two data sheets.

Outside the barrier, the ten grades sit close together: haze ≤ 3 % (typical 1.42–1.85 %), wetting tension on the AlOx face ≥ 48 mN/m on nine grades and ≥ 40 mN/m on 104 GTH (typical 46–56 mN/m), coefficient of friction ≤ 0.55 (typical 0.36–0.39). Haze matters for a see-through pack; wetting tension is what tells you whether ink or adhesive will key to the face you intend.

How it runs

The oxide layer is a few tens of nanometres thick. The notes below are the ones the TDS raises, in the order they bite: handling, extrusion, adhesive, then the contents.

Printing
Print grades · coating protects the oxide
Lamination
Solvent, solventless, water-based
Extrusion
Below 280 °C · extrudate ≤ 15 µm
Web stretch
≤ 2 %
Adhesive
Soft grade for peel strength
Retort

Which face goes where

The coated and the sealable faces are marked on the roll label. On a lamination grade the AlOx face has no protective coat: keep it out of the adhesive interface unless the trial says otherwise, place it on the product side of the outer web, and keep it off grooved rollers — reduce idler contact on that face so the oxide is not scratched.

Tension, extrusion and adhesive

Run the web with no more than 2 % stretch. Above that the oxide can craze and the barrier drops, and it does not come back. In extrusion lamination keep the temperature below 280 °C and the extrudate at or under 15 µm; a hotter or thicker extrudate can crack the oxide. Adhesive choice is the other half of the bond — a soft adhesive generally gives the higher peel strength.

What the trial has to prove

Adhesion after lamination, the OTR of the finished structure rather than of the film alone, and — for lid stock — flatness after retort. Send us the finished result and it goes on the grade record. Contents that are acidic, alkaline, spicy, high in fat, alcoholic, or preserved with an active preservative are the ones to trial before a production order: the TDS calls its data a reference, and we hold to that.

Where ALOX PET earns its cost

PET is chosen for what it survives, not for what it recycles into. Fit the grade to the process first.

Typical starting points, not fixed recipes. Grade choice follows the retort requirement — see the ten-grade matrix above.
Market Typical structure What the film buys
Retort pouches PET / AlOx-PET / CPP Barrier that survives sterilisation, where BOPP cannot
Dairy & dessert lids PET / AlOx-PET / sealant Flat lid stock with a clear barrier and no foil
Ready-meal lidding PET / AlOx-PET / PE Transparent top web that survives the oven or microwave cycle quoted
Board lamination AlOx-PET / board Barrier in the liner without a metallized look

Questions we get before the trial

If the answer you need is not here, ask it directly — technical questions get an engineer's reply, not a brochure.

Is ALOX PET recyclable?

It belongs to the PET stream, not to a mono-material stream. The oxide layer is a few tens of nanometres and does not change the polymer identity of the base film — but whether a given pack is recyclable depends on the whole structure, including sealant and print coverage.

Which grades handle 121 °C retort?

Seven: 102 GTN, 108 GTN and 113 GTR from the lamination side, and T109, 107 GTR, 106 GTR and 112 GTR from the print side. 105 GTH is boil-only; 103 GTH and 104 GTH are for neither. Retortability is a property of the grade, not of the coating, so confirm it on the lot's TDS before you quote a shelf life.

Print grade or lamination grade?

Use a print grade when the roll itself is printed, or when the AlOx face is handled on the press and in the boil or retort step — the protective coating is what carries that handling. Use a lamination grade when the film goes into a structure and the printing happens elsewhere; it also gives the lowest barrier, 113 GTR at 0.11 OTR typical. If you need print plus retort in one roll, stay with a print grade. A few lamination grades are marked print-suitable, but they still carry no coating — the AlOx face stays exposed, so they are not a substitute for a print grade.

Why not just use ALOX BOPP?

BOPP is the cheaper route where the pack stays below its heat limit and PP recyclability matters. PET is chosen when the process needs heat resistance or stiffness.

What thickness do you supply?

12.0 µm on 102 GTN; 12.2–12.5 µm on the other nine grades. It is fixed per grade rather than offered as a gauge ladder, and we do not publish a single figure that would then be read as the only option.
